Noelle Niederman, a junior Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering major, chose Santa Clara University for its strong engineering program and the opportunities it offered to grow both academically and personally. "SCU's engineering program stood out to me for its hands-on learning, small class sizes, and emphasis on innovation that connects theory to real-world impact," she says. Originally from Mercer Island, Washington, Noelle came to Santa Clara to compete on the Division I beach volleyball court. "Competing as a Division I athlete while pursuing Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has challenged me to balance discipline, teamwork, and resilience," she reflects, "values that mirror SCU's mission of educating the whole person."

Noelle's path toward aerospace began unexpectedly during the COVID-19 lockdowns. "After months indoors and a classroom discussion filled with pessimism about the future, I realized I wanted to be someone who builds solutions rather than accepts limitations," she recalls. That moment sparked a fascination with space exploration and propulsion that later led her to spend ten weeks studying power systems for NASA's Gateway lunar project. Her favorite class, Thermodynamics with Professor Robert Marks, deepened that passion. "Through his guidance, I developed a deep appreciation for the subject and discovered that I had a real strength in the material," she says, noting that she has continued working with Professor Marks on engineering research ever since.

On the beach volleyball team, Noelle experienced one of the most meaningful chapters of her SCU journey. "This past season we finished second in the conference, the best result in program history," she says proudly. "What has meant the most to me is how this team has taught me to believe in myself and stay composed under pressure." Balancing athletics with a demanding engineering curriculum has strengthened her discipline and resilience. "With the right people beside you, you can push far beyond what you thought possible," she reflects.

Receiving the Fr. Coz Scholarship has had a tremendous impact on Noelle's ability to continue her studies. "It has allowed me to pursue my degree with greater focus and less financial stress," she says. "I can fully dedicate myself to learning, research, and hands-on projects that prepare me for a future in engineering innovation." She hopes to pay that support forward through mentorship and sustainable aerospace innovation. "I want to help create opportunities that inspire others to dream bigger and push boundaries," she says.

Looking ahead, Noelle aims to advance sustainable aerospace systems that make space exploration more efficient and accessible. To the donors who support the Fr.
