Leito Navarrete
Leito Navarrete
M.F.A., Indiana University, Painting
Leito specializes in figure painting and drawing with conceptual emphasis on symbolism, religion, and queerness. His work is a synthesis of identity that fuses together and re-contextualizes narratives, transforming psychological wounds into avenues of hope and resilience. The work can be read as collage and his compositions frequently present two or more “truths”, a literal and ideological aesthetic that Leito attributes to his upbringing as a first-generation Hispanic-American. Experimentation with canvas shape and form, as well as legibility is also a major aspect of his studio practice and he is intrigued by language translation as a metaphor for the process of painting. His compositions often begin digitally and are then materialized after deep critical comparison between images found across the internet, in family photographs, or within the imagination.
